Community embraces NAIDOC Week celebrations
More than 350 community members took part in the City’s NAIDOC Week celebrations last week, with almost every event fully booked or beyond capacity.
Marking the 50th anniversary of NAIDOC Week as a national celebration, the City delivered a packed program of events highlighting Aboriginal culture, art, storytelling, and community connection.
Highlights included:
- The sold-out Kaarla Kaatijin children’s theatre performance by Yirra Yaakin delighted families at the Subiaco Arts Centre.
- Bec Garlett’s session of Dreamtime storytelling and Indigenous games was fully booked and deeply engaging.
- A Cultural Awareness Session facilitated by local Whadjuk Noongar Elder Danny Ford in the Subiaco Library, with bush tucker food supplied by Gather Foods.
- A hands-on bush pharmacy workshop at Subiaco Library proved especially popular, with participants learning about traditional plant-based remedies.
- A Welcome to Country, traditional Smoking Ceremony and native-inspired morning tea led by Yirra Yaakin brought staff and community together in a moment of reflection and celebration.
- The Aboriginal art and dance workshops with Rubeun Yorkshire were both popular, with the art workshop filling to capacity.
- The special NAIDOC Storytime event at Subiaco Library, focused on this year’s theme, was beyond a sellout and warmly received by families.
Everyone who responded to our survey said they enjoyed the event they attended, learned something new about Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander culture, and felt more connected to the local Aboriginal community as a result.
