City sweeps state planning awards
The City of Subiaco’s Planning team took home a whopping six awards at the Planning Institute of Australia (WA) awards at a ceremony on Friday, receiving the most accolades of any other organisation in attendance on the night.
The wins include Local Government Team of the Year, Improving Planning Processes, and Performance and Innovation in Development.
Projects featured in the nominations include Park Street Heritage Area, demonstrating the City’s transformative approach to heritage planning through community engagement and empowerment, and the ‘Regal Subiaco’ development proposal, which balances urban growth, heritage conservation, accessibility, and community benefit to create a replicable model for heritage-constrained sites.
On the night, the team were also awarded the Minister’s Award and the President’s Award, both for the ‘Regal Subiaco’ development proposal.
Senior Strategic Planning Officer Emily Robertson also took out the Emerging Planner of the Year Award, recognising her drive, creativity, innovation and professionalism across a diverse range of projects.
Mayor David McMullen said, “Our Planning team's haul of six awards was more than anyone else's, on the night. This is very fitting industry recognition of what our Council experiences from the Planning team firsthand: That is - technical excellence, sound advice, and better ways of planning. The award of Planning Team of the Year means our planners are standing out from amongst their peers at other comparable local governments.
Two of the awards, Improving Planning Processes (for the Park Street Heritage Area) and the Emerging Planner of the Year, will progress to the national Planning Institute of Australia Awards in Canberra in May 2026.
