City supports Refugee Week this June
The City of Subiaco has been a Refugee Welcome Zone since 2022.
In line with this commitment to supporting refugees and recently arrived people, the City hosts a number of free events and offers regular services and resources both during Refugee Week (Sunday 15 to Saturday 21 June 2025), and throughout the year.
Refugee Week, facilitated by the Refugee Council of Australia, promotes greater awareness of refugees, the issues they face, and the contributions they are making to the Australian community.
To assist in promoting awareness, the City is hosting a presentation by the Centre for Asylum Seekers Refugees and Detainees (CARAD) at Subiaco Library on Saturday 21 June from 10am to 11am. This session will highlight CARAD’s vital support services, and feature stories of individuals rebuilding their lives in Perth. Attendees are encourage to bring along non-perishable food staples, household cleaning items, and sanitary products to donate to the CARAD pantry. Bookings essential.
Additionally, representatives from Grandmothers for Refugees will be at the library on Tuesday 17 June from 10.30am to 11.30am to answer any questions about the issues confronting refugees.
The Subiaco Library also runs a free weekly English conversation club on Tuesdays from 9.30am to 10.30am, for people who want to improve their English language skills and engage in safe and supportive conversations.
Community members can also access a variety of free online resources via the Subiaco Library’s e-library, including Road to IELTS, LOTE4Kids, and Transparent language online. These resources are available to anyone with a Subiaco Library card.
