The City of Subiaco has proudly been a Refugee Welcome Zone since 2022.

As part of this commitment to supporting refugees and newly arrived community members, the City delivers a range of free events, services, and resources during Refugee Week (Sunday 14 to Saturday 20 June 2026) and throughout the year.

The 2026 Refugee Week theme, A Million Stories, highlights the diverse experiences, journeys, and contributions of refugees, while encouraging the community to connect through storytelling, listening, and learning. Coordinated by the Refugee Council of Australia, Refugee Week aims to raise awareness of the challenges refugees face and celebrate the valuable contributions they make to Australian communities.

To support this year’s theme, the City is hosting a presentation by Centre for Asylum Seekers, Refugees and Detainees (CARAD) at Subiaco Library on Saturday 20 June from 10am to 11am.

This session will highlight CARAD’s vital support services and feature stories of individuals rebuilding their lives in Perth. Attendees are encouraged to bring along non-perishable food staples, household cleaning items and sanitary products to donate to the CARAD pantry. Representatives from Grandmothers for Refugees will also be in attendance and share a few remarks. Bookings are essential.

Additionally, representatives from Grandmothers for Refugees will be available at Subiaco Library to answer questions about the issues confronting refugees on Tuesday 16 June from 11am to 12pm and Thursday 18 June from 11am to 12pm.

The Subiaco Library also runs a free weekly English Conversation Club on Tuesdays from 9.30am to 10.30am for people who want to improve their English language skills and engage in safe and supportive conversations.

Community members can also access a variety of free online resources via the Subiaco Library e-library, including Road to IELTS, LOTE4Kids and Transparent Language Online. These resources are available to anyone with a Subiaco Library card.
