City nominated for national placemaking awards

The City of Subiaco has received three nominations for the 2025 Mainstreet Australia Awards, recognising the City’s SubiPoP (Public Open Spaces) and SPACEMRKT Subiaco projects.

The awards, held every two years, recognise placemaking, urban vibrancy, and marketing projects that highlight Australia’s main street industry.

The SubiPoP Public Realm Upgrade project was nominated in the Best Main Street Place Activation – Council Led (over $100K) and Best Main Street Streetscape and Design categories.

The project, which incorporates upgrades at Seddon Street, Postal Walk, Seddon Street and laneways part of Subi Greenwalks, saw significant increases in community use in previously underused areas across the City. The upgraded areas are now not only more dynamic for local businesses, but have also made our town centre more vibrant, walkable, and people-focussed.

SPACEMRKT Subiaco is a finalist in the Best Main Street Place Activation – Consultant or Supplier category. Through collaboration with local creatives and property owners, local placemakers SPACEMRKT, in partnership with the City of Subiaco, have transformed empty shopfronts in Subiaco into spaces for exhibitions, artist residences, public art and pop-ups.

As well as cementing Subiaco as a cultural and creative destination, the project contributed to community perceptions of safety and wellbeing; bringing community presence back to key public areas.

Mayor David McMullen said, “These awards recognise excellence in main streets and city centres across the country. The two innovative projects featured in the City of Subiaco's nomination, coordinated by the City’s Economic Development and Place team, have transformed our city centre and created safe, connected, and cultural hubs for our community to enjoy.”

The awards night will take place in mid-September.
