City continues to support local economy

Last week, the City of Subiaco connected with local property owners and commercial leasing agents at a special event to provide insights on the current state of Subiaco’s main streets.

The Subiaco Main Street Forum was an opportunity to have an open conversation and discuss Subiaco’s current commercial vacancy rates, its performance in the market and to look at ways to help fill remaining vacant spaces.

The most recent commercial vacancy report showed that while overall commercial vacancy has decreased in the last 12 months, there has been an increase in retail vacancy over the same period. The area is experiencing a well-publicised renaissance with a record level of business confidence and the City is continuing to be proactive in supporting businesses and the local economy.

Attendees heard from the City’s CEO, who provided a high-level overview of Subiaco highlighting key economic, visitation and business statistics, as well as guest speakers from the commercial property and precinct activation industries.

Mayor David McMullen said the event was a great opportunity to have a two-way discussion with those who have a big impact on our high streets.

“Subiaco has come a long way in the last few years, and we are seeing a return to our reputation as a vibrant and lively suburb; one that people want to visit and where businesses want to operate,” he said.

“There’s always more that can be done and this event was a good starting point to talk about initiatives that the City is undertaking to progress and support our local economy, and how business owners and leasing agents can continue to support this upward trajectory.”

The City has been investing in a number of public realm upgrades, including Postal Walk, Seddon Street and, most recently, Forrest Walk. It aims to continue to increase direct engagement with the local business community into 2025.
