Celebrate 80 years of Children’s Book Week at Subiaco Library
Children’s Book Week runs from Saturday 16 August to Saturday 23 August 2025, and is turning 80 this year!
Each year, schools and public libraries across Australia spend a week celebrating books and Australian authors and illustrators. The week provides an opportunity for children to learn about the joys of writing and learn tips and tricks direct from authors.
This year, Subiaco Library will run a series of Book Week events over two weeks to allow plenty of opportunities for school students and community members to celebrate. More than 1000 students are expected to take part in these library events.
Highlights of Children’s Book Week at Subiaco Library include:
- Book Launch – Kev & Trev 2 by Kylie Howarth, Saturday 16 August 10.30am to 12pm. Join Kylie as she launches her latest graphic novel! Enjoy jungle tales, snacks, a scavenger hunt, games, and crafts. Bookings essential.
- Sharon Giltrow workshops, Monday 18 August. Sharon writes humorous and heartfelt picture books, as well as adventure-filled middle grade books. Sessions include pre-primary to year 2 from 9.30am to 10.30am or 11am to 12pm, and years 2 to 4 from 1pm to 2pm.
- Narelle Wynter workshops, Tuesday 19 August. Narelle is a paediatric speech pathologist, and has been inspired to write her own children’s books, utilising language to assist kids in developing their own reading skills. Sessions include pre-primary to year 2 from 9.30am to 10.30am, years 2 to 4 from 11am to 12pm, and years 4 to 6 from 1pm to 2pm.
- Karen Blair workshops, Wednesday 20 August. Karen is an award-winning author and illustrator who loves animals and the Australian landscape. Sessions include pre-primary to year 2 from 9.30am to 10.30am, years 2 to 4 from 11am to 12pm, and years 4 to 6 from 1pm to 2pm.
- Campbell Whyte workshops, Monday 25 August. Campbell creates stories about place, and strives to create an inclusive, supportive comics community. Sessions include years 2 to 4 from 9.30am to 10.30am, and years 4 to 6 from 11am to 12pm or 1pm to 2pm.
There will also be a library activation that the whole community can take part in, that will celebrate the quality of Australian literature. And, although it sits outside of Book Week, there will be a special Children's Book Week Storytime featuring Barking Gecko on Friday 29 August at 10.30am which will include dress-ups, crafts, games, and reading.
Students from Subiaco Primary School, Rosalie Primary School, Jolimont Primary School and Bob Hawke College are all booked to attend sessions at the library across the week, and there are also two outreach workshops scheduled for Subicare and the Lords Recreation Centre creche.
These schools will be given a support pack to take back to their classrooms and further their connection with Children’s Book Week and Subiaco Library. The library has received grant funding from the Children’s Book Council of Australia, which has contributed to strong promotion and engagement across the community as part of the week.
