Bin tagging results are in

20250426_1031112

696 bins were visually inspected as part of the Western Metropolitan Regional Council (WMRC)'s annual bin tagging program, and the results are in!

The results were very encouraging, noting a decrease in the number of properties that had contamination in their general waste, recycling, and FOGO bins.

There was also a 48 per cent improvement in sorting efforts within recycling bins, which is an increase on the 16 per cent improvement in 2024.

Bin tagging is an educational opportunity to give residents direct feedback about how to better sort their waste, and this year, the City's Waste team decided to team up with the WMRC to reward residents who were either sorting their waste exceptionally well, or who were notified about incorrect waste sorting habits, and changed them on the second round of bin inspections.

Some of the main contaminants found in bins include paint and aerosol cans; which need to be disposed of at the West Metro Recycling Centre in Shenton park, takeaway containers in FOGO bins; which belong in general waste bins, and soft plastics.

Soft plastics, including cereal bags, cling wrap, plastic bags, lolly wrappers, bubble wrap and chip packets, belong in your red-lidded general waste bin.

If you're unsure which bin to put something in, check the Recycle Right A-Z Directory, or call the West Metro Recycling Centre Hotline on 9384 6711.
