Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony clarification

Last week, the City responded to a request for comment from a journalist at Seven West Media regarding its Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony with the below, attributed to City of Subiaco Mayor David McMullen.

“The City of Subiaco will hold our annual Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony again in 2025.

“Supported by local Rotary Club volunteers, this first Citizenship Ceremony of the year is always an extremely positive occasion for each new Australian, their friends and family, and those who make the special occasion happen.

“As part as our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) the City of Subiaco has committed to "investigate" changing the date of future January Citizenship Ceremonies, however this does not suggest a particular outcome. It means our staff are looking into the matter.”

The subsequent story reports that there will be a poll on the matter, which is not correct. As per our Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan, the City has committed to: Investigate changing the date of Citizenship Ceremonies from 26 January, in consultation with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

We will keep the community updated as this action item progresses.
