The City of Subiaco has commenced works to transform much of the artificial stream at Theatre Gardens into landscaped garden beds, while preserving the lower and largest pond as a dedicated wildlife habitat. The changes provide an interim and reversible solution as the City explores longer-term renewal options for the water feature.
Works will involve draining and cleaning the upper sections of the stream before installing drainage, soil, and new plants. The existing concrete base and granite walls will remain in place, preserving the form of the landscape feature and allowing for future adaptation.
The lower pond will be retained as a wildlife pond, recognising its importance as habitat for local fauna, including tadpoles that are seasonally observed in the area. Additional aquatic plants will be introduced to support biodiversity, and the City will continue its mosquito-control program.
The stream is supplied by the park’s bore water system, and ongoing leaks have resulted in the loss of valuable groundwater resources...
Converting the upper sections of the stream to garden beds will help improve water efficiency, reduce maintenance demands and help address concerns raised by residents and visitors.
