The City of Subiaco has reached an important climate action milestone, with its City-owned sites now using 100 per cent renewable electricity through NaturalPower.
The City’s leased offices at 388 Hay Street have also made the switch, with the electricity used by the City’s tenancy matched with renewable electricity since April this year.
NaturalPower is a renewable electricity product supplied by Synergy and accredited under Australia’s GreenPower program. Through NaturalPower, the City supports renewable electricity generation while reducing the emissions associated with its operations.
The milestone is part of broader work to make the City’s day-to-day operations more sustainable.
During the past financial year, four petrol vehicles used by the City’s custodians were replaced with electric vehicles, with another electric vehicle now on order. Once it arrives, only one diesel vehicle will remain in the custodian fleet.
The City is also reducing waste through its tyre recycling partnership with Complete Tyre Solutions. In 2025–26, 73 end-of-life tyres – equivalent to approximately 2140 kilograms of material – were diverted from landfill for recycling or repurposing.
City of Subiaco Mayor David McMullen said the initiatives showed how practical changes to the City’s operations could contribute to its broader environmental commitments.
“Reaching 100 per cent renewable electricity across our City-owned sites is an important milestone, and extending this to our main leased office strengthens that achievement,” he said.
“Together with transitioning more of our operational vehicles to electric and responsibly recycling end-of-life tyres, these are practical steps that reduce the environmental impact of delivering services to our community.
“Each operational decision may represent one part of a much bigger picture, but collectively, they help us reduce emissions and waste, use resources more responsibly, and work towards a more sustainable Subiaco.”
The initiatives support the City’s Climate Change Response Plan, endorsed by Council in August 2025. The plan includes targets to maintain 100 per cent renewable electricity across City-owned sites and electrify all City-owned facilities by 2035.
