Entries are now open for the City of Subiaco’s youth writing award, back for its 34th year as the 2026 WA Young Writers Award.

The award recognises the innovation, creativity, and originality of young writers across the state.

Entries are open to all Western Australian school students from years one to twelve, with multiple age categories and a special award for the overall standout story.

Finalists’ stories will be published in an anthology available to loan from Subiaco Library.

More than 5,500 stories have been entered into the award over the past five years from across the state; as far north as Kununurra and as far south as Esperance.

Several past winners of the long-standing award have gone on to develop successful writing careers, including award-winning authors Kate Emery and Briony Stewart.

Mayor David McMullen said the award continues to inspire young people to share their ideas and unique perspectives through creative storytelling.

“This award celebrates the creativity and talent of young writers from every corner of the state. It’s always exciting to see the calibre of stories they produce, and to welcome them here to the City of Subiaco to showcase their work,” he said.

“The City is proud to support the next generation of storytellers and provide a platform for young voices to be shared with the wider community.”

Subiaco Library has hosted a series of workshops in the lead up to the awards run by local authors Renae Hayward and Kate Emery, and Anya Seabourne, a Creative Learning Associate at the Literature Centre.

Entries are open from 9.30am Friday 17 July to 5.30pm Monday 10 August and can be submitted online. To enter, visit www.subiaco.wa.gov.au/awards.
