This year, NAIDOC Week will take place from Sunday 5 to Sunday 12 July, with the theme ’50 Years of Deadly’.

NAIDOC Week is a time to recognise the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and to celebrate, the City of Subiaco is hosting a range of free events for the entire community to enjoy throughout the week.

On Wednesday 8 July, there will be a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony held at Lake Jualbup in Shenton Park, from 9am to 10am. During this event, there will be a traditional dance, a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony presented by Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company, and a native-inspired morning tea.

Following this event, also on Wednesday 8 July, there will be a Cultural Walk of Lake Jualbup, presented by Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company, from 10.30am to 11.30am.

During the walk, Noongar woman Denice Kickett will share stories that have been passed down to her, and teach attendees the Noongar names of flora, fauna, and local places. The walk will also be followed by a native-inspired morning tea.
