The City of Subiaco’s youth writing award, which is now in its 34th year, is returning in 2026 as the Western Australian Young Writers award.
This award recognises the innovation, creativity, and originality of young writers across the state.
Entries are open to all Western Australian school students from years one to twelve, with multiple age categories and a special award for the overall standout story.
More than 5,500 stories have been entered into the award over the past five years from across the state; as far north as Kununurra and as far south as Esperance.
Several past winners of the long-standing award have gone on to develop successful writing careers, including award-winning authors Kate Emery and Briony Stewart.
Ahead of the submission deadline on Monday 10 August, there will be a series of writing workshops hosted at Subiaco Library. Stay tuned on the City’s website and Facebook page for more information in the coming weeks.
Entries are open from 9.30am Friday 17 July to 5.30pm Monday 10 August. To enter, visit www.subiaco.wa.gov.au/awards.
