Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company will host its much-loved annual Family Picnic on Sunday 22 February 2026, presented in partnership with the City of Subiaco. More than just a day out, the Family Picnic is Yirra Yaakin’s invitation to connect with culture, community and the creative spirit behind contemporary Aboriginal theatre. Set within the beautiful Theatre Gardens surrounding Subiaco Arts Centre, where Yirra Yaakin is Company-in-Residence, the event offers audiences the chance to meet and yarn with the Yirra Yaakin team and learn more about what the company has planned for 2026.
Families and friends are encouraged to bring a picnic and a rug and enjoy an afternoon of live music, local Aboriginal performances, face painting and more. Food can also be purchased at stalls by Kuditj Kitchen featuring native-inspired treats and Crumbs Patisserie.
The afternoon’s entertainment includes a traditional Noongar dance performance by Wadumbah Aboriginal Dance Group, led by Elder, musician and storyteller James Webb, alongside live music from an exciting line-up of Indigenous artists, including DJ Macca, Bella-Rae, ICONYX, and Rhythm Tide, courtesy of Boss Arts Creative, with Indigo Ellis.
• DJ Macca, a proud Noongar DJ from Boorloo making waves in the tech house scene
• Bella-Rae, a gifted Torres Strait Islander with a powerful, lyrical sound
• ICONYX, WAM Award-winning artist from the East Kimberley
• Rhythm Tide, a dynamic First Nations collective, performing soulful vocals in language with guitar, didgeridoo and DJ accompaniment.
• Indigo Ellis, a NAIDOC and WAM award-winning singer whose soulful melodies resonate with the rich heritage of Noongar Boodjar.
“This was a beautiful afternoon! awesome singers and band, exceptional setup with loads of fun for the children and oh my goodness fresh damper and kangaroo stew. it was lovely, thank you.” Picnic Attendee.
