Visible Mending for Beginners: Basket Darning

Visible Mending

A hands-on, creative mending workshop where you will  learn how to give new life to your favorite clothes! In this session, Tobi Beckley, the instructor behind i.have.a.stitch, will guide you through the Basket Darning technique, showing you how to creatively repair and embellish your garments sustainably.

This workshop is designed to inspire and empower you to mend and restore your beloved clothing. Mending is a meaningful act of love, and we are excited to pass on these timeless skills, helping you make your cherished pieces last for generations—and keep them out of landfill!

We will dive into Basket Darning, a versatile and effective mending technique that allows for creative experimentation with color, texture, and shape. Whether you're new to visible mending or looking to refine your skills, this workshop is the perfect place to start.

In this workshop, you will:

  • Be introduced to the Basket Darning technique, including materials, tools, and the types of repairs it's best suited for (and when to look for alternative methods).
  • Be shown demonstrations of this technique on various types of clothing, including woven fabrics.
  • Practice darning techniques on swatches provided in your kit.
  • Learn how to apply the technique to your own clothing with holes.

In the second half of the workshop, we'll explore how this technique can be used as a visible mend, enhancing your clothing with creative, intentional repairs. All attendees will receive their own repair kit to use during the session and take home for future mending projects.
