In the past nearly each street corner in Subiaco had a corner shop on it. Local residents would buy bread, milk, mixed lollies, ice-cream and newspaper, and other goods daily from their corner shop. The corner store was not just a building of convenience at the end of the street; it was also a meeting place, a source of social support for many local residents. It offered opportunities for women who were at home all day a chance to get out and socialise, it employed many local boys, and provided an important part of the experience of growing up in Subiaco. Today many of these corner shops have been made into homes or other businesses.
Visit the museum and experience what it was like to shop at an old-time corner shop. Don an apron and play the role of the shop keeper or be ready, as the customer to fill your basket with goodies.
