Dementia Series - Dementia and Grief

This session provides an overview of the grief, loss and emotional impact of the changes caused by dementia. It provides information about the kinds of change and loss experienced with dementia, the ways people may experience and express their grief, and emotional coping strategies for family carers of someone living with dementia.

You will gain knowledge in:

• your responses to grief and loss
• tools to help with support, networking and stress
• strategies you can put in place to support your wellbeing

Dementia Australia facilitators have specialist dementia knowledge, skills and experience. This session is delivered interactively, you will be encouraged to share your experiences alongside other participants giving you the opportunity to develop new support networks.

Suitable for: People caring for someone living with dementia.

This session is not suitable for volunteers, professional carers or people employed in the health or aged care industries . This is not a form of professional training or development however the information could still prove beneficial for those working as carers for people living with dementia.

Morning tea in Rankin Gardens will be provided.

What is a Dementia Memory Kit?

Dementia Memory Kits are designed especially for those caring for people experiencing memory loss. They foster communication and are meant to be explored together with a caregiver or family member. Each contains items to provide opportunities for:

• Prompts - materials provide prompts to engage in conversations, stimulate memories, and to provide opportunities for positive and engaging interactions.
• Reminiscence - materials for sharing life experiences, memories and stories from the past. It not only brings back memories of people and places from another time, but also evokes the emotions associated with them.
• Share memories - as a way of leading into a question more gently providing clues for the sorts of things you will talk about.
• Action instead of words - tactile games are included in the kits.

NOTE: Please do not attend Subiaco Library if you are feeling unwell, you are most welcome to cancel your free ticket at any time and rebook into future upcoming events when you are feeling better and are symptom free.
