Window gallery pops up in Subiaco laneway

Walmsley Lane off Rokeby Road has been given a vibrant makeover recently, with six stunning art pieces added to one of its walls.

‘Walmsley Windows’ is an outdoor gallery project that showcases local artists through a series of ‘windows’ that mimic the existing windows of the Bar Amelie exterior wall, which backs onto the laneway.

Within each window frame you’ll find a beautifully unique piece of art; be it a tea cup overflowing or a sunset over the Italian Cinque Terre.

Participating artists are Kelly Canby, Michelle Gilmore, Mia Laing, Brian Clark Mosson, Annette Peterson, and Peta Riley.

Participating artist Kelly Canby said, “I was absolutely thrilled to be one of six artists invited to be part of this project. Working on the Walmsley Windows has been a wonderful experience.

“My piece (made up of seven pieces) was inspired by and based on some of my favourite Subiaco locations. I’ve lived in the area for over fifteen years and there are many places I feel connected to so it was a little tough narrowing it down – in the end I chose to focus on Subiaco Library, Theatre Gardens, Perth Café Café, Delisio Pizza, Whisk and the Regal Theatre. These places hold very special, warm and dear memories.”

Mayor David McMullen said, “We are committed to delivering diverse and vibrant public art that reflects our City’s unique character, history, and future aspirations. The Walmsley Windows project captures this vision and is part of our ongoing work to make Subiaco a place that people want to visit and spend some time in.”

Public art plays a vital role in the City of Subiaco’s place making, urban design and tourism efforts. The City aims to utilise vibrant public art, like Walmsley Windows, to create a sense of place and infuse qualities of diversity, character, creativity and imagination into everyday life.
