The City of Subiaco has seen a significant increase in the use of the West Metro Recycling Centre by residents over the last couple of years, demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainability and waste reduction.
From 2022 to 2024, Subiaco residents dramatically increased their use of the Shenton Park recycling centre which the City is a member council of; this means residents can drop a number of items off for free or for a small fee.
Transactions for free services grew by 140 per cent, while paid services saw a 66 per cent increase over these financial year periods.
Mayor David McMullen said that residents are becoming increasingly conscious about waste and sustainability.
"Sustainability starts with the everyday actions we take,” he said.
"When households prioritise recycling and reduce waste sent to landfill, their collective efforts help create a more sustainable future."
West Metropolitan Regional Council CEO Stuart Devenish said, “It’s great to see the uptake in responsible disposal and recycling by the residents of our member councils such as Subiaco.
“In particular, increased use of our free drop-off services means that quality goods are being reused, materials such as metal and cardboard are being reclaimed and recycled, and hazardous waste items such as batteries and paint are being processed safely to minimise the damaging impact on both the environment and our health.”
