A new physical and online exhibition showcasing the top 50 artists from the Shaun Tan Award for Young Artists opens its doors today.
The imaginative and innovative works are part of the City of Subiaco’s long-running prestigious visual art award with school students from Kununurra through to Esperance – and everywhere in between – entering for the chance to exhibit their pieces.
Exhibition visitors – both in-person and online – can vote for their favourite piece to win the people’s choice award, and also see one of the digital artworks that was submitted this year.
Mayor David McMullen said there was a greater regional spread of entrants this year and this diversity really shines in the exhibition.
"The Shaun Tan Award for Young Artists is now in its 21st year and it's fantastic to see it grow and evolve year on year," he said.
“The creativity and imagination on display at the exhibition is really impressive. I encourage as many people as possible to come along and see the exhibition for themselves."
The Shaun Tan Award for Young Artists exhibition runs from Monday 10 July to Sunday 6 August at Subiaco Library and
online.
It showcases the top 10 entries from each award category – lower, middle and upper primary, and lower and upper secondary.
An official award night in late July will close out the 2023 awards with patron, Shaun Tan, set to give a speech to the attending students.
Earlier this year, Subiaco Library worked with leading artists including local Subiaco illustrator, Kelly Canby, to deliver a series of art workshops for students to help them develop, learn and grow prior to submitting their entries to the Shaun Tan Award.
