Plastic Free July is almost here and, with the State Government’s recent announcement on banning single-use plastics sooner than planned and the City’s focus on reducing waste to landfill, there’s never been a better time to get involved.
Last year, an estimated 326 million people worldwide took part in Plastic Free July, with households reducing their waste and recycling by almost 5 per cent (or 21kg) on average.
By encouraging people to take simple action in their daily lives and habits, Plastic Free July makes it easier to reduce single-use plastic waste every day.
As a member of the Western Metropolitan Recycling Council, the City is supporting Plastic Free July events run by their Waste Watchers team and reminding residents that they can make use of their convenient recycling services throughout the year.
The City also has a number of initiatives in place year-round to help reduce waste to landfill, including a food organics program for businesses. Containers for Change is also in full swing with a number of drop-off points enabling residents to contribute to a more circular economy while donating much-needed funds to those who need it.
There are a number of local businesses who can help you achieve your goals this July. Many of our coffee shops offer a discount for bringing a reusable cup for your morning flat white, and many sell more sustainable alternatives to single-use plastic containers, shopping bags or common items such as cling wrap.
