Did you know you can help celebrate the heritage and history of Shenton Park by nominating a place for inclusion on the Local Heritage Survey?
The City is currently accepting submissions for the survey, and wants to hear from the local community about places of significance they wish to recognise. This can include your own property, or any other property or place within the precinct.
Shenton Park had several names before the mid-1930s, including West Subiaco, South Subiaco, Daglish, and Rosalie. However, long before the official renaming in 1934, Jualbup was the original name for this area. The wetlands of Lake Jualbup served as a vital source of sustenance for the Noongar people who resided in this region and migrated along the Swan River and Swan Coastal Plains in accordance with the seasons.
In terms of its architecture, several of Shenton Park’s key heritage buildings were designed by key Western Australian architects, including Edgar Jerome Henderson and Harry Jefferis; responsible for the first portion of St John of God Subiaco, and the early Bayswater and Claremont Hotels, and Percy Harrison; whose work included the Corrigin Town Hall, a portion of the Rokeby Road Precinct between Hay and Barker Streets, and St Mary’s Church in West Perth.
Whittaker Brothers, established in 1894 and operating in Subiaco from 1900, were prominent timber and hardware merchants that supplied building materials to locals – and many of the early houses in Shenton Park were constructed with their materials (pictured above).
Nominations for inclusion on the list open today, Friday 4 July, and will close at 5pm on Monday 4 August.
