New seated ballet classes in Shenton Park

A new fortnightly, chair-based ballet class has debuted in Shenton Park – perfect for older adults looking to enjoy the beauty of ballet in an accessible format.

Facilitated by Aurelien Scannella and Sandy Delasalle, co-founders of Ballet4Wellbeing, the classes foster a sense of community and social engagement through ballet and classical music that is safe and supportive of a range of physical abilities.

Ballet4Wellbeing’s seated ballet program celebrates the artistry of ballet, and aims to release tension, build strength, improve circulation, and reduce fall risks.

Aurelien Scannella and Sandy Delasalle have more than 35 years of experience, with notable stintsat West Australian Ballet, as professional ballet dancers, choreographers, directors and teachers.

Aurelien said, “we began teaching our seated ballet method in 2024 after witnessing the profound impact that gentle, music-based movement can have on older adults.

“The aim was to design something safe, inclusive, and uplifting that supports mobility, cognitive engagement and social connection.”

Scannella said the classes are ideal for older adults “who would like to stay active, improve balance and mobility, stimulate the mind, and enjoy moving to beautiful music in a friendly and supportive environment.”

Mayor David McMullen said, “Programs like these new seated ballet classes are providing older adults in our community the opportunity to stay active in a safe and supportive environment, whilst also making meaningful social connections. The classes are already popular, and it’s fantastic to see our community embracing programs that celebrate lifelong learning and connection.”

Seated Ballet takes place fortnightly on Thursday mornings, from 11.15am to 12pm, at the Shenton Park Community Centre. $10 entry, no bookings required. Visit the City’s website for more information.
