From iPhone basics and scam awareness to the best smartphone apps for travel, Subiaco Library’s new regular event, ‘
Tech, Tea and Treats’ offers comprehensive support to those wanting to build their digital skills.
The events, which will take place at 10am on the last Friday of each month, include a brief presentation on a technology-related topic, and then, the chance to chat to an expert who will walk you through tasks on your smartphone or tablet over a cuppa and a treat.
The series will launch on Friday 30 May with ‘
Can you spot a scam?’, which includes a talk from
BeConnected, a Federal Government service that offers a range of resources and classes online to help people build their digital literacy. This session will include helpful information about phishing, Tax and Medicare scams, and how to get help if you suspect you’re being scammed.
Other upcoming Tech, Tea and Treats sessions include;
- Friday 27 June: Apps for smarter travel, including apps and websites to help with flight information, taxis, weather and navigation.
- Friday 25 July: Useful tips for using your Android phone, including accessibility features, photo tips, security and privacy.
- Friday 29 August: iPhone basics, with similar tips to the Android session above.
- Friday 26 September: Protecting your personal information online, including being aware of what you share online, identity fraud, and keeping your information secure.
- Friday 31 October: Connecting to others, including how to set up video calling on WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and FaceTime.
- Friday 28 November: Safer online shopping and banking, including tips and tricks for online shopping for Christmas.
Mayor David McMullen said the new series is timely and important.
“Digital scams are more prevalent than ever, and it’s important that we educate ourselves and our community to ensure we are as protected as possible. Series like this one at Subiaco Library are a great way to not only improve digital literacy, but increase awareness of how we can stay safely connected online.”
