Local 11-year-old takes out top spot in Photographic Award

The 2021 Photographic Award winners have been announced with an 11-year-old Shenton Park resident taking out the Kids category.

Oliver Tomkins (pictured below) – who attends Shenton College – took out the top spot for his entry Honeyspew. Judges said it was a fun image and the photographer should be congratulated for imagination and initiative.

Six photographers in total picked up awards across three main categories – Mobile, Open and Subiaco – as well as children and youth award winners.

The overall winner was Lidia D’Opera, whose natural candid capture brought happiness and warmth to the judges.

Entries in this year’s Subiaco category featured local landmarks and landscapes; Alec Thomas won the category with an image of Jolimont which judges said was a lovely silhouette with blooms standing proud against the solid black background.

These images are amongst 59 finalists’ photographs now on display at Subiaco Library until 30 May.

Exhibition visitors can put themselves in the judges’ shoes by voting for their favourite entry in the People’s Choice Award which will be drawn at the beginning of June.

The Photographic Award celebrates creativity across Perth and offers photographers a chance to showcase their original works. The City of Subiaco has been running the awards for 20 years.
