The City planted 511 new trees in parks, reserves and on verges in 2024 to increase our urban canopy and provide a number of social, economic and environmental benefits to the community.
Street trees can improve land value, purify air, filter noise, play a role in modifying the effects of climate, provide shade to reduce heat generated from the road and verge surface, and, importantly, provide valuable habitats for the local fauna.
Wherever possible, the City plants Australian natives which are adapted to our local climate.
To establish juvenile trees, the City waters them from planting until two years of age when trees are usually able to draw the water they need independently.
However, given the challenges of climate change – for example, last year was the hottest summer on record! – some trees occasionally need a helping hand to thrive, and your assistance would be appreciated.
If you notice your verge trees not looking as vibrant as it once was this summer, it may need a drink – and a bucket of water may be just the tonic.
Rainwater from your tank would be ideal but you can also reuse water collected from showers, baths, and basins provided it’s not soapy or contaminated.
If the tree fails to improve, then it may need closer inspection by City staff – in which case, please contact us on 9237 9222 or
city@subiaco.wa.gov.au.
