Have your say on the Draft Climate Change Response Plan

The City is seeking community feedback on the first section of its Draft Climate Change Response Plan.

The City’s Corporate Carbon Reduction Plan (CCRP) was endorsed by Council in 2020, and was established to guide the City’s approach to reducing the organisation’s emissions. To ensure the targets and actions remain up to date we have reviewed the CCRP and commenced the preparation of an overarching draft Climate Change Response Plan (Plan).

Since endorsement of the Corporate Carbon Reduction Plan in 2020, the City has achieved carbon neutral certification through Climate Active for four years (and was the very first local government in Western Australia to receive this certification), progressed the transition of its light fleet to electric vehicles, procured renewable electricity, and reduced total energy consumption.

In February 2025, the City renewed its participation in a renewable energy agreement called the Sustainable Energy Project to continue to reduce its carbon emissions from operations.

The reviewed CCRP, now called Corporate Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction, forms the first section of the draft Plan. Preparation of the remaining sections to mitigate and adapt to climate change will commence following endorsement of the first section. The additional sections include corporate adaptation, community greenhouse gas emissions reduction, and community adaptation.

Mayor David McMullen said the plan is a crucial step for a more sustainable future.

“The City of Subiaco is an industry leader in our promotion and adoption of sustainable practices to manage climate change. This draft Climate Change Response Plan marks our long-term commitment to action.

“We’ve seen an impressive 39 per cent reduction in the City's total corporate emissions across the past five years. In this new draft plan, we are aiming for net zero total corporate emissions by 2040.

“During the engagement period, we welcome community feedback on our revised targets for energy consumption, corporate emissions and other environmental factors; and feedback on the way the City reports on our progress towards these targets.”
