Friday Film Club to premiere at Subiaco Library next month

WAAPA film academic Dr. Damien Spiccia is bringing world-class cinema to Subiaco as part of a brand-new Friday Film Club series at Subiaco Library!

Starting on Friday 6 February from 6pm to 9pm, club members will view a world cinema film and enjoy a post-film debrief and discussion. Snacks and drinks will be provided, and membership is free.

Facilitator Dr. Damien Spiccia’s “obsession” with film started at a young age.

“It all began in childhood, when I’d haunt the film section of my local library, go home to watch Margaret Pomeranz and the late David Stratton on The Movie Show, then beg my dad to take me to the films they recommended; even if I barely understood them,” he said.

“What I love about film is that it never sits still; it’s always responding to the world around us, and there’s always something more to know. Cinema is democratic, and it remains an art that everyone can enjoy and be challenged by. It’s all about how it makes you feel.”

Damien has curated a diverse line-up of films from library streaming platform Kanopy for the club to watch.

When it came to selecting films, Damien said “I’ve tried to program an eclectic selection that hints at the rich diversity of cinema itself; from classics like On the Waterfront to contemporary standouts like Playground, as well as animation, Indigenous Australian cinema, and more.”

The film club is one of several new initiatives at Subiaco Library that are a result of grant funding for ‘community cohesion projects’, awarded through the Australian Library and Information Association.

Mayor David McMullen said, “Subiaco Library is a place where people can share ideas, connect with one another, and enjoy cultural experiences beyond the bookshelves. Initiatives like this new Friday Film Club will spark conversations, and continue to position our library as a hub of community activity.”

Friday Film club is for people aged 18 to 40 years old.
