At its meeting this week, Council endorsed the implementation of 240L Food Organics, Garden Organics (FOGO) waste service.
The FOGO services offers a three-bin system; a red lid bin for general waste, a yellow lid bin for recyclables, and a green lid FOGO bin, in which people can recycle their food scraps and garden waste together.
Once collected, waste from FOGO bins is made into high-quality compost that can be distributed amongst City parks, gardens and other natural locations, therefore reducing greenhouse gas emissions that would result from organic waste going directly to landfill.
Council also endorsed the provision of a twice-yearly bulk green waste collection service for larger prunings and garden clippings.
“The City is very excited to be moving to the FOGO waste system, as we know it will have a beneficial and long-lasting impact on our local environment,” Mayor David McMullen said.
“Sustainability is a core value amongst much of our community; and it underpins how we operate as a City. Through FOGO, we’re proud to not only prioritise environmental sustainability, but also to champion sustainable practices amongst our local residents and business owners.”
Implementing the three-bin FOGO system brings the City in line with the Australian Standard for waste and recycling, and is consistent with the objectives of the City of Subiaco’s
Waste Plan 2020 – 2025.
The City of Subiaco is proactive and innovative in its approach to environmental sustainability, especially resource conservation, recycling and green energy. Alongside this new FOGO service, some of the City's most notable
sustainability initiatives include its certified carbon neutral status, urban forest planting program, donation of food organics bins to local businesses, a Verge Valet trial to help reduce waste to landfill, and the elimination of glyphosate by instead adopting a chemical-free steam weeding process.
The City will now commence a procurement process with the aim of commencing the rollout of FOGO in winter 2023. More information about the City’s FOGO bin rollout will be available soon.
