At its meeting on 28 May 2024, Council endorsed the designation of the Park Street Heritage Area, along with the associated Local Planning Policy 3.15 – Park Street Heritage Area.
This decision follows a comprehensive consultation period and careful consideration of community feedback and heritage assessments.
The newly designated Park Street Heritage Area encompasses the following properties:
- 91–121 Park Street, Subiaco
- 87–142 Townshend Road, Subiaco
- 3 Kings Road, Subiaco
- 77–121 Bagot Road, Subiaco
- 67–96 Olive Street, Subiaco
- 139–184 Barker Road, Subiaco
Designating a heritage area introduces measures to conserve and enhance its cultural heritage significance and character. This designation focuses on preserving the external aspects of properties visible to the public, ensuring any changes align with the area's heritage values. Homeowners can still extend and adapt parts of their properties that are not street-facing.
Mayor David McMullen described heritage as a core community value.
“Heritage is the backbone of what makes Subiaco who we are. You don't build these suburbs, or these communities, overnight.” he said.
“By protecting our heritage areas, we preserve the distinctive charm, and historical significance, of Subiaco for the next generation and beyond.”
The City offers a variety of
support measures for owners of heritage properties, including the Heritage Advisory Service, which provides free advice from a local architect.
