City prepares for extreme weather with drain upgrade

City of Subiaco drains are set to get an upgrade to reduce the risk of flooding on our streets and around local businesses thanks to a decision of Council last week.

In the wake of severe storms last year, a number of sites were identified as needing an upgrade or additional maintenance to increase the severity of storms they can cope with (level of service).

Maintenance work has already been carried out but the newly approved upgrade works will see the drains increased to the highest level of service, ensuring the City is prepared for a 1 in 100 year storm.

Mayor David McMullen said the drainage improvement plan would equip the City's drainage networks for changing rainfall patterns.

"Following last winter's unseasonably high rainfall and resultant flooding, there has been significant community interest in the City's drainage infrastructure,” he said.

“Localised flooding can have a huge impact on our local businesses and our residents so it’s vital we take preventative action to help put our community in the best position possible when storms occur.

“Council has committed significant investment to enable upgrades to prepare the City's drainage infrastructure for a 1 in 100 year flooding event, should this occur in future. This high level of service has been adopted to help mitigate the risk of damage and destruction that flooding can cause.”
