It is anticipated that the City of Subiaco’s FOGO (food organics, garden organics) waste service will roll out commencing Monday 8 May, and will take approximately one month to complete.
FOGO waste is compiled of food scraps, garden vegetation, and lawn clippings. Once collected, waste from FOGO bins is made into high-quality compost that can be distributed amongst parks and gardens. This process means less waste is sent to landfill, and less greenhouse gases are produced.
From 8 May, City of Subiaco residents will receive a 240-litre, lime green-lidded FOGO bin, and a small FOGO kitchen caddy with special compostable bin liners.
Mayor David McMullen said, “The City is excited to be moving to the FOGO waste system in May, ahead of previous schedules, as we know it will have a beneficial and long-lasting impact on our local environment.
“Sustainability is a core value within our community, and it underpins how we operate as a City. Through FOGO, we’re proud to not only prioritise environmental sustainability by diverting waste from landfill, but also to champion sustainable practices amongst our residents.”
The City’s current green waste system is achieving approximately a 30-35% diversion rate, and with the introduction of the new FOGO system, the City is anticipating a 60-65% diversion rate.
Residents will receive further information about the roll-out in February via mail, and the City will be hosting a series of waste education pop-up sessions at Subiaco Library and Subi Farmers’ Market, commencing in March.
