Subiaco streets are to be made safer after three identified traffic ‘black spots’ were awarded $212,500 in funding from Federal and State Governments to reduce the risk of traffic hazards under the
Australian Black Spot Program.
The Black Spot Program provides $110 million each year to directly improve road safety and the funds are allocated to projects with a proven crash history, or locations that are identified as high-risk. By funding relatively low-cost safety works like lighting upgrades, traffic islands, and traffic calming devices like speed humps, the program helps to reduce crashes and save hundreds of lives on Australian roads.
Combined funding from the Federal and State Government Black Spot Program has been allocated for improvements at three City of Subiaco locations where right-angle crashes are predominant.
Funding of $37,500 has been allocated to upgrade the ‘black spot’ intersection at Bagot Road and Hensman Road, which involves the construction of traffic islands on Bagot Road, and kerb extension to improve sightlines.
Proposed works at the roundabout at Nicholson Road and Derby Road include the construction of raised plateaus at all approaches of the roundabout, and upgrading existing street lighting, with total project funding of $95,000 to carry out these improvements.
Similar works totalling $80,000 are planned for the third identified ‘black spot’ at the Townshend Road and Barker Road roundabout.
“Funding from the Black Spot Program will be put to good use, making roads in Subiaco safer for everyone,” Mayor David McMullen said.
“City staff will manage the design work, and a top-up funding contribution towards all three projects has been included in Council’s approved 2022-23 budget.”
