The City offers a cardboard-only recycling bin to help manage large volumes of recyclable cardboard waste efficiently.
This bin is specifically designed for flattened cardboard and comes only in the larger 660 litre size, making it ideal for businesses that generate significant amounts of cardboard.
Using the dedicated bin helps ensure that cardboard stays clean and dry, improving the quality of the material for recycling and reducing contamination in general recycling streams. It's important to only place clean, flattened cardboard in this bin, no plastic, food containers, or other waste.
The blue cardboard bin is collected weekly, every Friday.
The general waste collection is provided to all residents, businesses and public spaces.
All general waste goes directly to landfill, please help reduce our environmental impact by minimizing what you put in this bin.
The less waste here, the better!

Tips for management of the FOGO bins
- Any smelly food items e.g. meat/fish/shellfish pop in a caddy liner and leave them in the fridge/freeze and transfer into the large FOGO bin the night before it is due to be emptied
- Place newspaper in the bottom of the larger bin to catch any residual liquid
- Paper towel lining in the bottom of the caddy bags will also assist with any leaking issues as they are thin.
- Only fill the caddy ¾ of the way to ensure you can tie the bags.
- Clean or hose out the bins once they have been emptied or spray the bins with fly spray
- Ensure the bin lids are always closed
- You can purchase bin kill here which is zip tied to the bin handle, but sits inside the bin to kill odours/flies
- Purchase larger 120L/240L bin liners, to use alongside the smaller caddy bag liners
- Utilize the FOGO bins for garden waste as well as food waste, mixing them improves the composting process by balancing moisture (from food) and carbon rich material (from garden waste).
- Recycling bins are collected fornightly

Electrical waste (known as e-waste) should not be put ANY kerbside bins because it contains hazardous materials such as lead, mercury, and cadmium, which can leak into the environment and cause serious harm to human health and ecosystems.
When e-waste is sent to landfills or incinerated, these toxic substances can contaminate soil, water, and air. Additionally, electrical items often contain valuable materials like gold, copper, and rare earth metals that can be recovered and reused through proper recycling.
It also poses serious safety risks, including causing truck fires. Many electronic devices contain lithium-ion batteries, which can be easily damaged or punctured when compacted in waste collection trucks. Damaged batteries can overheat and ignite, leading to dangerous fires that threaten the safety of waste collection workers and emergency responders.
Disposing of e-waste correctly not only prevents pollution but also conserves natural resources and supports sustainable waste management practices.
The West Metro recycling centre offers a free drop off service for E-waste, to see a full list of accepted items please click

All bins must be stored within the property boundary (other than when left out for collections)
The City also recommends that bins be stored away from public areas and kept in designated storage spaces to ensure waste is managed effectively and safely.
Bins should not be left permanently in laneways or on verges, as this can obstruct footpaths, create safety hazards, and contribute to litter and illegal dumping. Proper bin storage helps maintain a cleaner, more orderly environment and reduces the risk of vandalism, pests, and odours. Residents and businesses are encouraged to place bins out only on collection days and return them promptly to their storage areas after servicing.
Commercial businesses are not included in the City’s bulk waste collections and do not receive bulk waste passes. These services are provided exclusively for residential properties to help manage household items that are too large for regular bin collection.
Businesses are responsible for arranging their own waste disposal through private services, including the removal of bulky items. This helps ensure that the City’s bulk waste program remains sustainable and focused on residential community needs.
We can provide stickers foir the bins to help people sort their waste correctly.
