Advertising and signage
Some forms of commercial advertising signage require approval from the City.
Except for bus shelter signage and Public Authority signage, no signs are to be placed or constructed within road reserves or public spaces within the City, without first consulting the City. Any signs in the road reserve are subject to Activities in Thoroughfares and Public Places Local Law 2014.

Exempt advertising signs
The following signs generally do not require development approval, provided they meet the stated requirements set out in Table 2 of Local Planning Policy 8.2 – Advertisements (Signs) (LPP 8.2):
- Awning sign
- Bus shelter sign
- Construction sign
- Flag sign
- Home occupation or home business sign
- Portable sign
- Plaques or plate signs
- Projecting signs
- Property sale or lease signs
- Temporary signs
- Temporary event signs
- Under verandah signs
- Wall signs
- Window signs
You must seek written confirmation from the City whether a signage exemption applies. The information you need to submit to the City to obtain an exemption is outlined under Part 4.2 of LPP 8.2.
Furthermore, exemptions
do not apply in the following instances:
- Signage for properties within the Rokeby Road and Hay Street Heritage Area; and/or
- The signage addition results in more than five (5) individual signs per tenancy; and/or
- The proposal includes illumination, radio animation or movement, reflective, retro-reflection or flourescent materials, unless otherwise stated in Table 2.
Advertising signs requiring approval
The following signs require development approval from the City:
- Above roof signs
- Above verandah signs
- Balloon or blimp signs
- Freestanding panel signs
- Panel signs
- Pylon signs
- Roof signs
- Third party signs
All signage requires approval for properties included on the Heritage List or within heritage areas, including the Rokeby Road and Hay Street Heritage Area.
