Streetscape improvements for Nicholson Road
Wednesday 24 November 2021

At last night’s Ordinary Council Meeting, Council endorsed the construction of streetscape improvements on Nicholson Road between Rosalie Street and Hensman Road.

Following a request from local business for additional parking in the area, residents and road users had the opportunity to provide their comments on proposed streetscape options.

More than 250 submissions from residents, local business owners and other community members informed the creation of a modified design. This new design balanced the feedback received broadly and locally.

The changes will see additional kerbs and nibs installed, an extension to the verge adjacent to the laneway entrance on the northern side of the street, the creation of two additional parking bays, and speed plateaus. No verge trees will be removed as a result of the construction works.

The footpath on the southern side of Nicholson Road between Rosalie Street and Hensman Road will also receive an upgrade as part of the works.

Subiaco Mayor David McMullen thanked everyone who took the time to take part in the consultation, and acknowledged the way in which Council and staff had worked in tandem to reach a solution that took into account the invaluable public feedback.

“The option approved by Council will ensure continued safety for Nicholson Road users and residents, with improved sightlines for drivers exiting the laneway,” he said.

“It also addresses the request for some additional parking to support the local businesses at this popular location which is a hub for the Shenton Park community. There will be no change to nearby residents' use of the laneway, which they made abundantly clear to us was valuable to them and important to retain."

"The way in which this long-running issue has been handled shows the considered approach to decision-making that our community can expect of their Council.”

It is anticipated that the streetscape improvements will commence in early 2022. Local residents and business will receive more information prior to the work starting.
