Online ceremony celebrates valued volunteers during COVID-19
Monday 18 May 2020

The City usually celebrates its dedicated volunteers during National Volunteer Week each year with a lunch, but this year looked a little different as we instead held an online award ceremony.

The virtual ceremony was hosted by Subi Voice of Youth (SVY) volunteer, Caitlin, who has been a volunteer with the City for four years, serving as secretary, president and vice-president of SVY.

Caitlin said volunteering had given her new experiences and opportunities to meet countless people, gain new insight into issues, and learn new skills and improve existing ones.

The City is very fortunate to have 57 dedicated volunteers who gave over 1000 hours of their time to our community last year.

But volunteering is more than hours, it’s about the impact on the community; our volunteers have contributed to preserving and sharing local history, planted thousands of trees and native plants, managed a community garden for some of Subiaco’s most disadvantaged residents, delivered books to local aged care facilities, and much more.

Mayor Penny Taylor said recognising and celebrating our volunteers was more important now than ever in these unprecedented times.

“On behalf of the City of Subiaco, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all our volunteers – you have had a significant impact on the lives of so many people in our community and our City would not be the same without you,” she said.

The City has many volunteers who have been with us for years and this year, the City will present six volunteers with a Voluntary Service Milestone Award for five years of service. These six volunteers have given back to the community through the City’s environment program, seniors’ events, and the Subi Voice of Youth.

This year’s National Volunteer Week theme is ‘Changing Communities. Changing Lives’. National Volunteer Week runs from Monday 18 May to Sunday 24 May.
