During COVID-19, the City is supporting local young people by expanding its Youth Achievement Grants program in order to help them develop personally or professionally.
Residents who are aged between 12 and 25 can apply for funds to support their in-person or remote participation in a diverse range of activities, including events, competitions, community projects, and education or training.
While many events and celebrations, including WA Youth Week, have recently been cancelled or postponed, coronavirus is challenging local young people to innovate and adapt making it an opportune time to learn and develop.
We’ve collated some of the experiences from previous Youth Achievement Grant recipients below:
Jackson, 2019 Arafura Games in Darwin, Australia
I am a para athlete hoping to qualify for the Paralympics. I won a silver medal for Australia in the open men's para discus. I met heaps of other athletes and also got to experience competing in the heat and humidity. It was an international competition so I got to compete against other countries. The grant helped pay for my airfares to the competition. It is fantastic that City of Subiaco offer this help as it really helps towards costs.
Caitlin, 2019 Master of Architecture study abroad program in Lisbon, Portugal
I took part in a 6 week study abroad program in Lisbon, Portugal with the University of Western Australia over January and February of 2019. During this time we studied under the guidance of local Portuguese architects, and got to explore many different parts of Lisbon and Portugal. I applied for this program to continue my studies within a wider global perspective while gaining the opportunity to explore new parts of the world. I learnt valuable knowledge about architecture, both in Lisbon and in a wider context, while also gaining insight into the history of Lisbon and Portugal. The Youth Achievement Grant provided me with valuable financial support which allowed me to attend this program. I would like to thank the City of Subiaco for offering this grant to the youth of Subiaco, which supports and fosters new learning and life experiences.
Finn, 2019 Scouts Camp at the International Scout Centre in Kandersteg, Switzerland
In December 2018 some friends and I went to Switzerland, to go to the international scout centre. I learned a lot about other cultures from the other guests staying there and also how to sled and snowshoe. The Youth Achievement Grant helped me to afford to go on this amazing trip and for that I will be forever thankful.
