Recycling facility fire update
Friday 6 December 2019

Update: The City and SMRC worked together to minimise the amount of time that recycling materials were diverted to landfill. As of Thursday 19 December – more than two weeks earlier than anticipated – all City’s recycling is being delivered to the SMRC recycling facility in Canning Vale.

Cleanaway’s Material Recovery Facility in Guildford had a fire recently that meant Perth lost its largest recycling facility.

Along with many WA councils, the City of Subiaco’s recycling is processed through this facility so, while they rebuild, we need to find alternatives to process recycling.

The Southern Metropolitan Regional Council (SMRC) is now ramping up capacity at its waste facility and is prepared to accept the City’s recycling from 6 January. The City is working together with the SMRC to try to bring this date forward.

We are continuing to make every effort to minimise the amount of recycling sent to landfill and urge you to continue using your recycling bin appropriately so that we can recommence processing immediately once SMRC can accommodate our recycling.

If practical, you may also want to consider stockpiling some recyclables over this period.

If you have any questions, please email city@subiaco.wa.gov.au. We will be providing more updates on this page as they come in.
