Dedicated staff member collects 852 tonnes of green waste for recycling
Tuesday 5 November 2019

The City of Subiaco collected 852 tonnes of green waste last financial year, all of which was recycled into mulch – a 26.8 per cent increase on the previous year.

City of Subiaco Chief Executive Officer Rochelle Lavery said this was a great result for the City and what made this result even better was that the collection of green waste was all achieved by one dedicated staff member.

“Jerry Witkowski has been with the City for more than 30 years and collects residential green waste each and every week,” Rochelle Lavery said.

“He is a valued member of the organisation and community, and it’s great to see more residents taking advantage of this service.

“When I came to the City I was blown away with the green waste service provided here, I don’t know of any other City where you can have green waste collected every week. Jerry does a great job of providing this customer service to our community.”

In order for Jerry to pick up green waste and for the service to remain cost efficient, several requirements do need to be met, including placing a minimum of four and maximum of ten green waste bags on your verge on the same day as your general waste collection, and ensuring tree branches and prunings are no more than 3m x 1.5m x 1.5m.

After collection, the green waste is consolidated by the West Metropolitan Regional Council (WMRC) and the final mulch product is available at the West Metro Recycling Centre for residents to collect and use free of charge.

“Much of the resulting mulch from green waste is sent for re-use into the local horticulture industry, but there is some available for residents to collect to use on their own gardens at home,” WMRC Chief Executive Officer Stefan Frodsham said.

“Using mulch on your garden has a host of benefits, including a reduced need for watering, which is especially important coming into summer.”
