The 2019 Photographic Award winners were announced on Monday with two young Subiaco residents showing their true colours with winning black and white entries.
Six photographers picked up awards across three main categories – ‘Mobile’, ‘Open’ and ‘Subiaco’ – as well as children and youth award winners.
The overall winner was Carine-based photographer Kay Cypher, whose technically challenging capture of two birds in mid-flight created a “serene and peaceful piece of wall art”, according to judges.

Entries in this year’s Subiaco category featured local landmarks and landscapes. Clinton Price took out the category with an image of construction works at the Station Street Coles building, which judges said captured a piece of visual history; depicting Subiaco in a state of transition.

Twelve-year-old Subiaco resident, Paola Ion, won the Mobile category with her entry In His Own Little World. The ‘magical monochrome’ as described by the judges, scored points for conveying a three dimensional fairy-like forest.

Ten-year-old Subiaco Primary student, Natalia Sprogoe won the Kids category with another black and white shot titled, Cesky Krumlov. Judges said the landscape photograph was supremely sharp with full detail but little clutter, and was a demonstration that age is no barrier to achieving photographic excellence.

These images are amongst 65 finalists’ photographs on display at Subiaco Library until 17 November. Exhibition visitors can put themselves in the judges’ shoes by voting for their favourite entry in the People’s Choice Award.
