City of Subiaco art award judge wins Premier’s Book Award
Tuesday 6 August 2019

Local resident, author and judge of the City of Subiaco’s Shaun Tan Award for Young Artists, Kelly Canby has taken out the Premier’s Prize for Writing for Children at the Premier’s Book Award.
Ms Canby was recognised for her picture book The Hole Story which judges said was a memorable book that will intrigue children while engaging those adults who connect them with it.
Local resident of 12 years Kelly Canby works closely with Subiaco Library, Subiaco Primary School and local businesses to encourage young people to read and practice art.
Ms Canby launched her latest children’s book Rodney at Subiaco Library earlier this year and works with Subiaco Primary School and Subiaco Bookshop to promote reading and writing.
Illustrations by the well-known local author and artist have also decorated shop front windows across the town centre including Subiaco Library and Dymocks Subiaco.
Ms Canby said working with the local community provided an opportunity to contribute.
“Any chance to give back to a community that offers so much for its residents is a pleasure,” Ms Canby said.
“Subiaco library has a soft spot in my heart. When my son was much younger we’d pop in almost daily for rhymetime or to see the fish, and as he got older it was Lego Club,” she said.
Mayor Penny Taylor said the Subiaco community was made up of many intelligent, hard-working and inspiring individuals.
“Congratulations to Ms Canby on this excellent achievement and for her ongoing work in supporting literacy in our community,” Mayor Taylor said.
Subiaco Library provides a program of cultural and educational events for adults and children including author talks, information sessions, school holiday programs and practical workshops.
The 2019 Shaun Tan Award for Young Artists attracted 1330 entries from across the state, with artworks judged by a volunteer panel of artists, illustrators, educators and authors.
