Are you interested in helping young writers to build their creative confidence?
The City of Subiaco is seeking expressions of interest from people with a background in creative writing or children’s literature to join the Tim Winton Award for Young Writers judging panel.
The panel reads and discusses the entries for the annual Tim Winton Awards and ultimately decide the winners in each category and the overall winner.
If you are interested please read the information below about the award and the commitment and expectations involved and complete the expression of interest form at the bottom of the page. Send the form to award@subiaco.wa.gov.au by 5pm Friday 7 June.
Tim Winton Award
The City of Subiaco presents the Tim Winton Award for Young Writers on an annual basis
The award encourages creativity, innovation and imagination, giving Western Australian school students an opportunity to present their creative writing
The Tim Winton Award is open to Western Australian school students in years one to twelve
Submissions must be the sole work of the entrant; entry is limited to one person and must be an original piece of prose writing no more than 2000 words in length
Entries are judged individually in the following categories:
- Lower primary – school years one and two
- Middle primary – school years three and four
- Upper primary – school years five and six
- Lower secondary – school years seven, eight and nine
- Upper secondary – school years ten, eleven and twelve
Entries are judged on the originality of the themes, the development of the story and the quality (not quantity) of the writing

- Judges read stories in their category and determine a first, second and third place (required), plus any highly commended stories (optional)
- Provide brief comments on your top entries, and a comment on the category overall

Expectations
Your professional expertise is to be applied during the short listing process and judges’ evening
- Uphold personal and professional integrity
- Healthy debate is encouraged during the judges evening to ensure a thorough judging process is undertaken
- Remain respectful and courteous at all times to other judges and City of Subiaco staff
- It is expected that any and all conflicts of interest are immediately declared to the City of Subiaco as soon as they arise
