Home burglaries and theft from motor vehicles typically rises during December and January. Make it tougher for crooks with these simple tips for improving your safety and security over the Christmas and New Year period.
Are you ordering or sending gifts leading up to Christmas? Unfortunately parcels left outside your home can become easy pickings for thieves. Ensure that you sign for all valuable packages or if you won’t be home redirect the delivery to a secure location such as the post office, an Australia Post parcel locker, or to a friend or relatives home (who can sign for the item).
Take care and improve your home security during the warmer weather – ensure doors, security screens and windows are locked and in good working condition.
Theft from motor vehicles
Be proactive - do not leave valuables in your vehicle particularly where visible, ensure that car doors and windows are secured and park in well-lit areas. If you use a GPS, remove the device and also remove the suction mark from the inside of the windscreen.
While you’re away
- Let your neighbours (friends) know, and ask them to keep an eye out on your home
- Leave your emergency contact details with a friend/neighbour
- Ask a neighbour, friend or family to put your bins out (and in) and collect your mail (or have Australia Post hold your mail)
- Cancel any regular deliveries such as the newspaper
- Ensure you have locked and secured all doors and windows, and activated your alarm
