A visit to Subiaco by the Hon Rita Saffioti MLA, Minister for Planning, has confirmed the State’s willingness to work with the City of Subiaco on the next steps in its planning review.
Mayor Penny Taylor took the Minister on a tour of the city this morning that included stops in Subiaco, Shenton Park, Jolimont and Daglish, followed by coffee at a local café.
Minister Saffioti said she was fond of Subiaco and its surrounding suburbs and visited the area regularly.
“I know Subiaco well and it was great to tour more of the local streets with the Mayor.
“I believe that by working with the city we can develop a good plan that will get the balance right.”
Mayor Penny Taylor said she had invited the Minister for a tour so that she could share the elements of the city that are most valued by the community, as highlighted in the recently released themes of the ‘Shape our city’ public consultation.
“I invited the Minister here so that she could see the diversity of our community and our beautiful streets,” Mayor Taylor said.
“We know that residents value the feel of their streets, the protection of heritage areas and buildings, and good design and development.
“The community does not support ‘blanket’ density increases and they want to see consideration of services and infrastructure to support population growth.”
Mayor Taylor said that a recent council decision to continue the statutory process for draft Local Planning Scheme No. 5 and the draft Local Planning Strategy provided certainty to the community about the next steps in achieving a best practice planning framework.
“By preparing to meet the Western Australian Planning Commission’s deadline of 15 February 2019 we are giving ourselves the best chance to end up with a final scheme and strategy that incorporate local knowledge and feedback.
“Council’s job is to listen to all voices in the community and consider all available information when making decisions. I want to reiterate that we are listening,” Mayor Taylor said.
During the visit, the Mayor and the Minister discussed other key projects in Subiaco including the Subi East Redevelopment.
