An Elected Member’s Motion to continue the statutory process for draft Local Planning Strategy and draft Local Planning Scheme No. 5 was endorsed by council this week.
Cr Murray Rowe’s motion acknowledged the contribution of the community in providing extensive feedback and supported the work of staff in preparing an improved scheme.
It outlined the process that has been undertaken since council resolved to prepare a new scheme and revised strategy in August 2017 and the need to progress both documents concurrently.
Mayor Penny Taylor said the decision provided certainty about the next steps in achieving a best practice planning framework for Subiaco.
“Our community has given clear direction that they want an improved scheme and strategy.
“There is no question that the current WAPC versions are not suitable,” she said.
“Subiaco Council is doing absolutely everything it can to get a scheme that meets the needs of our city.
“By preparing to meet the State’s deadline of 15 February 2019 with an improved scheme and strategy we are giving ourselves the best chance to end up with a planning framework that incorporates local knowledge and feedback.
“We’ve voted to have certainty on the process and get best practice planning that preserves what we love about Subi. It’s what the community and the council want,” Mayor Taylor said.
Cr Rowe’s motion acknowledged that the WAPC and the Minister have encouraged the city to revise the scheme. He highlighted the need to finalise the process expediently.
The city recently released the key themes of the community consultation. Staff and elected members are now working to prepare solutions to the issues raised. Regular updates will continue to be provided to the community and everyone who made a submission.
