Heather Henderson becomes Freeman of the City
Friday 13 April 2018

The City of Subiaco bestowed its highest honour on former Mayor Heather Henderson after twenty-five years of dedicated service.

The Freeman of the City Award and civic badge were presented to Mrs Henderson by City of Subiaco Mayor Penny Taylor, in recognition of her outstanding, positive and lasting contribution to the city and its community. Representatives from local and state government attended the ceremony to celebrate Mrs Henderson’s career and achievements.

President of the Western Australian Local Government Association Cr Lynne Craigie recognised Mrs Henderson’s contribution to women in local government and the sector.

“Heather led by example, maintaining the highest standards of transparency and accountability throughout her 25 years of council service,” Cr Craigie said.

“She developed strong relationships with many key stakeholders, both within the sector and externally.”

City of Subiaco Deputy Mayor Judith Gedero said Mrs Henderson had provided her with guidance and leadership during their time together on council, and commended her contribution and support of volunteers and the most vulnerable in the community.

Mrs Henderson said she was grateful to the community for their support in challenging times.

“I am more than honoured and equally humbled to be receiving this award tonight,” she said.

“I will always be so grateful to the community of Subiaco who gave me the chance to serve them for so many years and who continued to support me through the tough times of the global financial crises and the nine years of the threat of amalgamation.

“I have developed the most significant networks within our community and the wider community and much of what has occurred and been achieved is a result of those connections.”

Mrs Henderson also joked that while historically the Freeman of a city could carry an unsheathed sword and graze sheep for free, she was unlikely to undertake such activities in Rokeby Road.

There have been eight Freemen of the City recognised since 1975, and Mrs Henderson joins former Mayor Richard Diggins as the only other living Freeman of the City of Subiaco.
