Preserving Subiaco Oval's history
Monday 16 March 2015

With football moving to the new stadium at Burswood in 2018, the City of Subiaco and West Australian Football Commission have teamed up to ensure Subiaco Oval's history is not lost or forgotten.

Work has started on a project to document Subiaco Oval's history, with the aim to use the information gathered to develop a future interpretation plan for the site.

The rich and diverse history and heritage of Subiaco Oval is intrinsically tied with the story of Australian Rules Football (AFL) in Western Australia, which has been played there since 1898. The grounds have also had a range of other functions and uses, including hosting other major sporting events and music concerts.

Prue Griffin from Hocking Heritage Studio has been engaged by the city to coordinate the first stage of the project, which involves conducting research and collating information around historic themes, including the oval's establishment and construction, its uses, roles and associations, and its social history from pre-colonial times to present day.

Community members are also encouraged to contribute relevant material for the project, including photographs, memorabilia, newspaper clippings or personal anecdotes.
