Business development
The Business Development section addresses the economic component of the City's sustainability initiatives by performing two key roles :
Plan, implement and coordinate a range of business sector initiatives.
The City of Subiaco recognises the potential benefits available through activities that address opportunities or challenges for the business community. The Business Development section coordinates the research, development and implementation of activities and initiatives which have the capacity to benefit a broad range of local businesses.
Maintain a strong partnership between the City and the business community.
The plans, initiatives and policies of Local Government have a considerable impact on local business. Similarly, the activities of the local business community play a vital and central role in defining an areas identity and image. The Business Development section actively works to promote partnership between the City and the local business community in areas of common interest.
Have your say in the vision of Subiaco’s CBD
Mainstreet is a concept that aims to revive and promote town centres into thriving community hubs.
This concept is designed to encourage local government, businesses and the community to work together to enhance the physical, economic and social environments of their commercial business districts or town centres.
The City of Subiaco together with ProSubi and Subiaco Business Association invite you to be part of developing a vision for the future of Subiaco’s CBD with others who share your energy and enthusiasm at a forum on Wednesday 18 November 2009.
Over the last thirty years traditional town centres, once important commercial hubs and meeting places, have been in a state of change primarily because of the development of “hard top” shopping centres. The success of these shopping centres is largely due to a unified standard of presentation, convenient mix of businesses and a coordinated approach to marketing and promotion.
This successful formula used by shopping centres can easily be adopted by traditional business districts. Mainstreet is designed to make this happen by encouraging the local community to initiate, develop and guide plans to create economically thriving and attractive town centres.
The key to the success of Mainstreet is its ‘grass roots’ approach. A community can take control of its own future by mobilising its natural energy and enthusiasm.
The concept of Mainstreet has been in existence for some time. It has operated in Canada and the USA for many years and was introduced to Australia in the late 1980s. It has already achieved significant success around the country.
Mainstreet is not a clearly defined program and does not follow a set of guidelines. It is a dynamic concept which varies from town to town, depending on the energy and desires of the community.
Two integral features of Mainstreet are:
· Community commitment
o Motivation and commitment from the community plus cooperation between private businesses, state/federal government and the City.
· Consultation and awareness building
o Public meetings, workshops and regular communication help build informed decision making based on the community’s decisions about the City’s aspirations.
Subiaco residents, workers and businesses are asked to share their thoughts about this exciting initiative at an upcoming community forum.

Decorative Lighting Strategy
The City of Subiaco has commissioned a study and the development of a concept plan for implementation of lighting in Subiaco commercial centres. Members of the local business community have proposed that distinctive lighting permanently be implemented to enhance the streetscape, attract visitors and contribute to the safety and security for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.
The existing uplights in Rokeby Road were designed to have changeable colours, and therefore could provide a starting point for a lighting scheme. Suggestions for decorative lighting include an increased use of facade lighting and extended uplighting on trees. The lighting would be permanently fixed and would also decorate the streets during the Christmas period, and during other times of the year such as Easter, Chinese New Year, St Patricks Day and during major sporting events.
Research into business issues
A research program into key issues that have the capacity to affect the local business community is being developed. These findings, on issues such as local retail needs, access to and use of modern information and communication technologies by Subiaco businesses, and a range of local statistics will be available through this website as they are finalised.
